Monkey, Pig and Pie

Inspired by the stories about Grimsby’s old Monkey, Pig & Pie Shop I have been working as Artist in Residence with Our Big Picture creating a Victorian theatre pop-up shop in Grimsby Top Town Market. During this residency I created artwork which is displayed within the Market and also created weekly online creative activities for public participation.
I collated the weekly creative activities into booklet which is being distributed by Our Big Picture alongside goodie bags of art materials. The booklet is a available to download here. I also had fun creating a set of making videos to accompany the activities.

Week Five Activities

How do you think the Monkey ended up in a shop in Grimsby? Where did he come from? My artwork has been inspired by Keith Suddrey's wonderful poem...
Todays task is to make a piece of artwork with whatever inspires you or you have available. Draw, paint, collage write..
Here are a couple of recorded versions of how the Monkey ended up in the Monkey, Pig and Pie Shop.
Story One:So the saying goes, one day a sailor ran into the shop and shouted “They’re after me! Look after my monkey!” The sailor never returned for the monkey. When the monkey died a statue was added to commemorate it.
Story Two:Mr Fletcher the butcher hired a stonemason to carve two pigs and pie to symbolise his trade. Having done one pig and one pie the mason asked for money in advance so that he could go and have a drink. Fletcher, fearing the mason would not return, refused so the mason carved the final figure into a monkey rather than another pig as if to say “You’ll not make a monkey out of me my friend!”.

Week Three Activities

Here is the third Creative Activity for Monkey, Pie and Pie. Last week the Monkey began a journey on a Magic Pie. This week he arrives in SPACE! Some options for creating your own artwork this week are:-

Download and print the resources to create your own cut and paste Monkey in Space Picture. These can also be used to make a stop frame animation using a mobile phone and a GIF making app.

* Use the resources as reference to draw your own version of the Monkey in Space. These can then be cut out / coloured in / animated.

* If you want to experiment with creating some writing / poem where do you imagine the Monkey might travel? What will happen when he arrives?

* I would love to see anything you make whatever it is you choose to do from any of these starting points...
